I grew up in Asker, Norway, after being adopted from South Korea at the age of 5 months. I consider myself self taught, even though I have been studying to be an elementary teacher in art. I’ve been living as an artist for the last 4 years, and love it. I have many interests outside of art, but non that I spend enough time on to be mentioned.
I have always been interested in art, and especially drawing. It wasn’t before I started studying to be an art teacher that I tried oil painting for the first time. That’s when I realized that I wanted to be an artist. I knew this was it.
What does art and design means to you?
Art of course means a lot to me, as it is my job and life. But I don’t spend a lot of time and money on design. I can enjoy good design in things, but I don’t really care as long as it’s functional.
How would you define your personal style?
That’s always a difficult one. It’s easier standing on the sideline when you’re defining things. I’ve heard magical realism, which I think suits well. Classical representational art, with a contemporary twist.
What is the process of your work? What kind of materials do you use?
It all starts with a vague and abstract idea, often just an idea of color and atmosphere. Humans are in the center of all of my paintings, so the next thing I do is taking photos of the model I want to paint. From there I play around in Photoshop for a while, searching for compositions. Then I start painting, alla prima, from one end to another, finishing the painting as I progress. I paint with oil on panel or canvas.
How do you get your inspiration?
I actually get my inspiration from all kinds of different genres. All from old and living painters, photographers, sculptors, musicians and filmmakers. I see myself as a painter of atmospheres, and not narratives, and music is probably the thing that inspires me the most right now.
What are your most critical challenges in your work?
Ideas! Finding a concept that works and hasn’t been completely explored has been my big struggle. I still fight with this, and probably will the rest of my career.
列出幾項你要達到的目標。 What are some of your goals?
Many of my goals have actually happened. Showing with my favorite galleries in the US and being published in great magazines. But I am still hoping for a big solo exhibition in the US. And also living somewhere in either NYC, LA or San Francisco.
你的夢想是？ What s your dream?
I don’t have many dreams these days. I’m trying to just enjoy my time here and now, at the same time I’m keeping productive.
在你的人生及創作路上的座右銘？ What is your motto in your work and life?
I don’t have any mottos in neither, but if I have to say anything, I guess “work hard, stay humble”.
