Your story

I'm half Swiss, half German. I live in South Germany. I'm a graphic designer and everything started with street art.

Freelance Artist and Designer
Born in 1982

dust is a freelance artist and designer with Swiss-German roots. His early work was heavily influenced by the street and urban art scene, adopting the moniker ‘dust’ in the year 2000. From that point until today, he has been developing his own, unique style. His work combines elements of neosurrealism, surrealism, and abstract painting. With acrylic, acrylic lacquer, and ink, his work focuses mainly on the mediums of canvas, murals, and designer toys. On his canvases and murals, dust creates fantastic worlds that immediately catapult the viewer into other dimensions. The worlds he draws are ever-changing, and show dynamic and turbulent scenes from which something new is always emerging. His scenes are full of wild, marbled games of color, exceptionally woven textures, and structures that purvey explosions of organic life and underwater worlds. In addition, the viewer will find worlds full of struggling mythical creatures called “Körperwesen,” whose tentacles circle his world in an amoeba-like fashion. In between, one will also discover his robust “Wabenmenschen,” who guard and observe the scenery around them.

As noted, dust also produces custom designer toys, each of which is a handcrafted piece, available at a premium in extremely limited editions. Each unique piece is hand-sculpted and painted, making each one in a series exclusive in its own right. His first official designer toy collection, titled “Radical Action Suits” (R.A.S.), were presented in 2006 and became the prelude to newer thematic character editions that he is still producing today.

What does art and design means to you?

Besides my family and life itself, it's one of the most important parts of my life.

How would you define your personal style?

My paintings are mostly abstract surreal.

Looking at the designer toys I make: The toys are based on old characters I used to paint a lot when I was a little younger. Each designer toy and custom toy has its complex story behind.

你的創作過程是怎樣的?你通常會用甚麼工具及材料?What is the process of your work? What kind of materials do you use?

I work with acrylic, acrylic lacquer and india ink on canvas, paper, wood and glass when it comes to painting. One of my favorite materials at the moment is glass: I’ve developed a new technique of painting directly on glass and the result always fascinates me, as it looks so three-dimensional.

When I paint murals, I mostly use spray paint, acrylic and acrylic markers.

How do you get your inspiration?

“In general, I am a child of the Star Wars generation and I recall countless comics from my youth. These things definitely influenced me, especially when creating designer toys. For my artwork, there is an infinitely complex diversity of influence, especially from nature.”

What are your most critical challenges in your work?

I love to experiment and to find new ways of expressing my thoughts and feelings. There is no real “critical challenge” from my point of view…

What are some of your goals?

I like when people think about the message I like to tell through my work.

What s your dream?

To live the life I live.

What is your motto in your work and life?

I always try to think positive. And as often as I can I go out into the forest, ride my mountain bike or go hiking to the top of the mountains. It keeps me in balance and gives me a lot of energy.

Most humans have lost the path of being a unity with nature. That is also something I tell with my paintings… We only have one planet and should find our way back to a more sensitive dealing with nature, animals and our neighbors.
